Retirement Communities - Fun and Enjoyable

When you think that going into retirement homes might not be a great idea, then you must consider going into a retirement community. The difference between a Retirement home and a retirement community is the size and the fun and enjoyment you get while you're in there.

Retirement communities have a lot to offer to seniors aging fifty five years old and up. Contrary to retirement homes, retirement neighborhoods are not just composed only of one building, but a huge lot with swimming pools, clubhouses, golf courses and a lot of amenities that would surely make retirement the greatest experience when it comes to rewarding oneself after years and years of work and caring for others.

There are a total of three types of retirement neighborhoods that one can choose from depending on his or her needs. Active Retirement communities offer less medical attention because the retirees are in healthy condition and do not have any problems with regards to their health. Active retirement communities are situated near hospitals or care centers so as to address any medical needs of their retirees. Supportive Retirement communities have their own medical staff working round the clock to ensure that everyone is in proper condition. There are also retirement communities that are both active and supportive.

Retirement Communities - Fun and Enjoyable

Going to a retirement community is indeed fun and enjoyable, not only can you mingle with other people who are also enjoying themselves, but you can also ensure that you are safe from harm while having fun and enjoying the facilities the retirement community offers.

Retirement Speech Examples

When a co-worker retires, it is indeed a special occasion. It is the grand finale of a career.
It is ironically a happy and a sad time. No doubt, the organization will miss the retiree, and the retiree will miss the organization. Customarily, a retirement party is given in honor of the individual who is retiring. Someone from the organization or the industry gets the lucky job of giving a speech for the retiree.

Let's say it is You! But what do you say? How do you say it? How long do you say it?
First find out how many people will attend. Next, find out who the people are. For example, are they co-workers, or are they clients? It is an unwritten rule (up until now) that retirement speeches are somewhat humorous and lighthearted, but respectful. It is after all, a fine day for the retiree. One they will never forget!

Below are two retirement speech examples. The first one is a sample speech, and the second one is a general outline. This outline could be adapted to fit almost any retirement occasion.

Retirement Speech Examples

Retirement speech example:

Good afternoon members of the GREAT Industry and welcomed guests. I have been honored to speak on behalf of my dear friend and colleague, Mrs. Boss.

My first memory of Ms. Boss, was some 40 years ago, when she resembled Mary Tyler Moore, and her vision to become a voice for USA residents. And I remember thinking, she's going to take this town!

When Ms. Boss and myself entered in this business, all those years ago, the GREAT Industry was a completely different world, with a certain stigma. Our products were, in the beginning, quite small and quite common.

In 19XX, Ms. Boss was instrumental in the approval of the mass production, which is commonplace today.

She has had an impact at the State and National level in order to provide a cost-effective production solution for our customers. In fact, she has lobbied for more rigid production standards and licensing requirements, which have allowed our products to become superior.

This is a significant achievement, which allows our products to provide our customers with quality. Which meet or exceed the expectations of State and National goals.

Which means that we have in the excess of 20,000 happy customers.

Use this guide to prepare your own custom speech:

Retirement speech example outline :

1. I remember...think of how the industry was at the beginning of the retiree's career.

2. Mention Colleagues, other industry members that have had an impact on the industry or organization.

3. Mention major Milestones in the industry or organization.

4. I remember...try to describe an amusing story about the retiree.

5. Look to the future direction of the industry or organization. What will the next generation move toward?

6. What core values have been important to the industry or organization. How have they changed and how have they remained the same?

Living in the Philippines - Most Popular Urban Retirement Cities of Foreign Retirees

When it comes to retirement locations in the Philippines, one has many options - major urban cities, larger rural cities, beach resorts, mountain retreats. Each has its own unique and attractive features. The major advantage of retirement in a major urban Philippines city are (i) international airport accessibility, (ii) excellent healthcare accessibility, (iii) all major sports activities, and (iv) secure, upscale shopping, night life and entertainment. In this category of major urban cities are the Manila metropolitan area, Cebu City in the Visayas area of the country, and Davao City in Mindanao.

MANILA

Manila is the capital of the country, and the primary port of entry for every foreigner flying to the Philippines. It is the gateway to the Philippines. For a foreigner seeking quick access in and out of the country, Manila is the place to be. Travel to Manila from California is 15 hours, from Hawaii it is 10 hours, from Tokyo it is a little over 4 hours, from Hong Kong it is less than 2 hours, from Singapore it is 3 hours, and from Europe it is basically 20 hours. Once you are in Asia, sitting in the China Sea, Manila is at the center. Trips to Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam, and Indonesia are quick and easy from Manila.

Living in the Philippines - Most Popular Urban Retirement Cities of Foreign Retirees

Manila is actually part of a major metropolitan area with an overall population of over 11 million people. So yes, it is crowded overall, yet, like all major cities in the world, there are areas within the metropolitan area which are quite diverse from one another.

Depending on one's retirement income, retiring foreigners tend to favor either the upscale, highly westernized Makati, Ortigas/Mandaluyong, or Alabang areas. These areas have all the amenities westerners are accustomed to, including all the biggest and most upscale shopping malls in the country. Makati is the financial hub of the Philippines, and it is full of western style upscale condominiums with all the latest amenities.

For those wanting an upscale, big city living, with access to the best entertainment, sporting events, unlimited shopping options, and most westernized lifestyle, within easy reach of foreign destinations, Manila is your best choice. The downside is that it is the most expensive than Cebu City and Davao City.

CEBU CITY

Cebu City is located on the island of Cebu in the chain of islands known as the Visayas. It is more centrally located in the country and is a domestic trading and transportation hub. It is much smaller than Manila, with a population less than 1 million, yet its people have a higher per capita income level. It is very pro business, and a more efficiently run city than Manila. It is very progressive and has become a large center of commerce. It has aggressively expanded its airport, which does receive certain direct international flights, though few in number.

Cebu has a large population of foreign retirees in relation to its population. Foreigners are drawn to its abundance of beaches and resorts. It is a beautiful city, surrounded by mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. Like Manila, it too has its upscale, modern shopping malls, casinos, and a great night life. Being a smaller city, getting around the city is much easier. It is now only beginning to see construction of high rise condominiums, which are abundant in Manila, and a favorite of western retirees.

Cebu has great medical facilities and it has just recently launched an effort in conjunction with the national government to further develop Cebu as a major medical tourism and retirement center for foreigners.

All in all, it has most of the westernized benefits of Manila, yet a lower cost of living, combined with the presence of many, many beautiful white sand beach resorts. Those who love living near the seaside, have interests in diving and other water sports, yet like the efficiency and amenities of a smaller modern city, then Cebu City would be your choice.

DAVAO CITY

Davao City is THE city of Mindanao, and by square miles it is the second largest city in the world. Its population is approximately 1.4 million. Located on the southern of Mindanao, it is the most rural of the three major urban cities, and it has the lowest cost of living. So, if you enjoy the lifestyle of a large city, but have limitations on your cost of living, Davao is the place for you.

Davao City does not get large numbers of foreign travelers, yet for those seeking outdoor adventures, the options are plentiful. Living in Davao is a bit like living in both an urban and a rural city, as the city has modern shopping centers, upscale gated communities and hotels, yet living there you become deeply rooted to the land outside the city. Just outside the city is Mt Apo with forested slopes and abundance of hiking opportunities, and located on a gulf, it is only a short boat ride to white sand beaches. Most of the land outside the city has been turned over to massive plantations growing pineapples, bananas, and other citrus. The city has a new, great world class golf course, and low rise condominiums are newly being built. It has committed itself to the development of a world class medical center, and is aggressively pursuing medical tourism.

In conclusion, it has been my experience that for a person who wants to retire in a major urban city in the Philippines, the choice between Manila, Cebu and Davao usually comes down to one's pension and/or other monthly retirement income. Manila is the most expensive, Cebu is next, and Davao has the lowest cost of living. Manila is the most cosmopolitan, and the Davao the most rural. All three are attractive spots for a foreigner seeking retirement in the Philippines in an urban environment.

Retirement in Puerto Vallarta - Live in Mexico - Cheap, Huh?

Mexico on a day? Sure, not a problem if you can survive on four cervezas during the day and sleep in a tent pitched somewhere in the woods during the night. Of course, if you live on the Mexican Riviera, you'll only be able to afford a couple cervezas a day but you will be able to sleep on the beach! In 1997, we moved to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, known as Vallarta or PV by the locals, and inevitably, when meeting folks in the States, we're asked why in the world we would live there. Most assume it's due to the low cost of living in Mexico and that one can do just fine on Social Security. The reasons why we have lived in Vallarta for ten years have very little to do with the cost of living. One of the reasons has to do with the latitude of Vallarta which is the same as Hawaii, resulting in a climate absolutely perfect for golfing, fishing, tennis, hiking, swimming, or whatever your hobby is for seven months a year, November through May.

The population of PV, our sleepy little Mexican fishing village located on Banderas Bay on the Pacific Ocean, just surpassed 350,000 making it equal in size to Anaheim, California or twice the size of Boise, the capital of Idaho. Of the 350,000 inhabitants, there are close to 50,000 North Americans during the seven month "high season". They have retired here in order to enjoy the many world class restaurants, seven magnificent golf courses, world class deep sea fishing, modern supermarkets and shopping malls, and night life galore. Most of these North American residents of Vallarta have satellite TV with 350 channels, high speed internet service, air conditioning, and all the other modern conveniences that could be found in the States. Clean water, clean food, modern hospitals with the latest in sophisticated equipment for first class medical care, and a high regard for safety will be found here in PV. Actually, there are very few reasons not to live in Vallarta.

We haven't lived here for ten years because it's cheap! As an example, gasoline is about 8 pesos per liter or .00 per gallon. Electricity is about the same as in the US, while telephone calls to the States are about four times as much as the same calls from the States. Food in the supermarkets is about the same as in the US; the imported products are much more, while the locally grown products may be much less. Imported hard-goods, such as electronics, at Sam´s Club, Walmart, or Office Depot, can be twice as much as the same products in the States. Automobiles are approximately 20% more expensive, imported clothing 50% more expensive, etc. From a residents perspective, NAFTA isn't working too well because all imported items are taxed to the hilt and cost substantially more than they do in the States. Housing, on the other hand, is generally much lower than in the States. Of course, this depends on where in the States and where in PV, but as an example, a small house in Central Florida would compare to a casita in PV with no view and would cost twice as much. A grand estate in Pebble Beach would compare to a luxurious villa on the hillside overlooking Banderas Bay and would cost two to four times as much. A 2,000 square foot condo in St. Petersburg, Florida, similar to one in the Marina Area of Vallarta, would cost roughly twice as much. On average, one can safely assume that housing costs in PV are approximately half of that in the States, keeping in mind that housing prices have almost tripled during the ten years we've lived here. One difference is that the house and condo values have been softening in California and Florida during the past year, while the boom in PV is expected to continue for at least another ten years. As the baby boomers retire and discover Vallarta, the demand for new houses and condos increases, as do the costs for land, materials, and labor, resulting in escalating real estate prices. Forecasts suggest that property values will double in the Vallarta area during the next five years.

Retirement in Puerto Vallarta - Live in Mexico - Cheap, Huh?

There are a couple other significant housing related differences. The first has to do with real estate or property taxes. The annual predial or property tax in Mexico is about .1% of the purchase price of the property. Assume you bought a condo in PV for 0,000 ten years ago, keeping in mind that it was twice as much as you could have bought in the States. It's value today would be about 0,000, however it's still on the books as 0,000 and it's annual taxes are approximately 0. A condo with the same cost basis of 0,000 ten years ago located in Florida or California could be taxed anywhere from ,000 to ,000 today and remember, this 0,000 condo would have been half of what you could have purchased in Vallarta. Also, if you're a resident for more than five years in Vallarta and can show that it's your primary residence, there is no capital gains tax upon the sale of your property. Annual automobile taxes and consumption taxes are equivalent to those in the States.
First class medical and dental care is available in Vallarta at roughly half the cost of that in the States. Skilled technicians for auto repair, electronics repair, carpentry, plumbing, air conditioning, and electrical work are about the same as in the States. Of course, there are many non-professionals available in PV that will work for half the price, but you get what you pay for! The one exception has to do with masonry. For a fourth the price of that in the States, you can have beautiful granite counter tops, marble floors, tile work such as pools, etc. Another major cost difference is that of unskilled labor such as maids, gardeners, or handymen. They are readily available for per day but don't expect the most efficient work in the world. Again, you get what you pay for!

In summarizing, the cost of living in Vallarta is probably somewhat lower than that in Florida and substantially less than California, given similar standards. It is probably higher than Milwaukee, Wisconsin or Cincinnati, Ohio but there's no comparison in life styles. One thing is for certain, we don't know of any Americans or Canadians living in PV solely on their Social Security payments. In order to live on a tight budget in Mexico, you have to head inland, away from the tourist areas, away from Paradise, and can expect a totally different life style. For the money, Vallarta is extremely hard to beat, but it's certainly not cheap!

55+ Communities: The Difference Between Nursing Homes, Continuing Care Retirement And Active Living

If you're approaching retirement age, you might be wondering about the difference between the types of housing options for seniors. From continuing care to 55+ communities, there are a number of options to help seniors, no matter what they're looking for. Living in one of these places can provide seniors with a variety of activities to keep them busy, but how do you know which is right for you?

55+ Communities

These are specially planned areas with seniors in mind. They're typically in warmer weather climates and offer amenities like fitness centers with pools, spas, tennis courts, bocce courts, golf courses, meeting rooms, ball rooms, arts and crafts centers, dancing lessons, on-site restaurants and more. Residents can choose to live in their own home or apartment and many offer gated security that's available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Although these 55+ communities are for people as they live out their retirement years, they are not retirement homes. They do not have nursing staff or other medical personnel on site and are not intended for residents with serious medical conditions that require constant care.

55+ Communities: The Difference Between Nursing Homes, Continuing Care Retirement And Active Living

55+ communities have age requirements that must be met before residents can move in. Consideration is made if one member of a couple is over 55, however many have restrictions on the length of time guests under 55 can stay in the community. This sometimes mean that other family members need to stay in a hotel for an extended visit, so check on these restrictions before buying a home if you expect to have long-term out of town guests.

Some 55+ communities that offer active living lifestyles offer special weekend getaways for people who are thinking of moving to the area. If you're interested in trying out the active living lifestyle before committing yourself to buying a home and moving in full-time, consider one of these weekends. This will let you try out a number of 55+ communities to make sure you've found the one that's right for you.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes provide round the clock care to residents. They're ideal for people who need continuous care like physical, occupational or other therapies. Nurses and other staff will help residents bathe, get dressed, eat and more. Once someone goes to live in a nursing home, they often stay there for the rest of their life, although some residents can be rehabilitated to the point where they no longer require long-term professional care.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities

A continuing care retirement community blends aspects of active living with the care available at a nursing home. They're the ideal situation for seniors who require daily assistance, yet do not need the constant, round the clock care of a nursing home. Seniors can live independently, yet move into assisted living as it's necessary. These typically don't offer as many amenities as 55+ communities.

Choosing where to live after retirement can be a big decision. Many seniors have active living lifestyles before retirement, and want to continue this lifestyle afterwards. Knowing the difference between these types of housing options can help you make a knowledgeable decision on the one that best fits your needs.

How Much Do Retirement Communities Cost?

Whether you're getting ready to retire yourself or you're researching for your parents, the cost of retirement communities is probably one of the first things you've thought of. There are a number of things to consider and there's no one right answer to the question 'how much do retirement communities cost?' Here are some of the different housing types and a rough estimate of what it might cost to live in one.

A Senior Active Living Community

A senior active living community is usually the least expensive type of community. Here, seniors can live together in apartments, attached houses or single family detached homes. These neighborhoods usually have a number of on-site amenities, such as fitness centers, golf courses, restaurants, tennis courts, arts and crafts centers, nature preserves and even spas. The price can vary according to the type of amenities, the location and whether residents are expected to rent or purchase a home, condo or apartment. However, it's possible to buy a home for under ,000 in some areas, which can mean a monthly mortgage payment is truly affordable even for retirees on a budget. Some also have an entrance fee and these average around 00. This fee can vary based on the location and is typically non-refundable.

How Much Do Retirement Communities Cost?

A Continuing Care Retirement Community

A continuing care retirement community, also known as a CCRC, offers many of the same amenities, but it also provides three different levels of care: independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing. Residents can choose to live independently, but have the added comfort of knowing that a nursing staff is there to help if necessary. A CCRC may have an expensive one-time entrance fee that can range from 0,000 up to million. Additionally a CCRC may have a monthly fee from 00-00. The fee can vary based on the type of care that is provided -- for instance, someone who lives in the independent living section may have a lower cost than someone who lives in the skilled nursing section.

Senior Apartments

Senior apartments are different than an active living community. These apartments are usually smaller than the condos or houses in an active living neighborhood and they typically don't offer quite as many amenities. While most of the apartments have full kitchens in each unit, it's possible to find a building that offers a dining room, library, laundry services and more right in the building. Many of these are also fitted to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, scooters and other things that will help residents stay mobile. Some of these apartments may be subsidized according to a resident's income, which can help residents on a budget.

Other Things That Can Affect The Cost Of Retirement Communities

Because the cost of retirement communities can vary wildly according to location, amenities and other variations, these numbers are only a rough estimate. To answer the question, 'how much do retirement communities cost?' it's important to compare like communities so you're getting an apples to apples comparison.
