Intercultural communication in the workplace can be far different now than even 20 or 30 years ago. In some work environments where there may be several cultures, languages may be several types of speech. Many workers of different ethnic backgrounds may stick closer together because of the fact that one's own kind may understand them better.
Nowadays, it is very commonplace to work alongside someone who may be gay or seen as totally different, has other language or religious beliefs that may affect work. Some other cultures that have come to the United States to work have come for more freedom and money to make a better life for their selves as well as their family. Just as our forefathers came from England many years ago to break away from the tyranny and taxation and to find a freer country to live and grown in, to have their own religion or lack thereof, establish a home place and to make a way to work and raise family; these similarities are much the same way today.
You do not even have to leave the United States anymore to meet people from all different cultures. Some people do not care to connect the barriers to make the differences connect more closely so they may understand and work together. It can be challenging to bridge the gap, but it can be achieved. some cultures react more to nonverbal actions and the environment settings than on verbal communication, whereas some American citizens rely more on verbal than on implied or nonverbal. One needs to come up with strategies for dealing with issues of possible miscommunication in the workplace due to the many diverse roles one may come up against. Then whatever solution that best works to rectify the situation should be applied to the barrier for the ones involved. This should make the cultural differences better within the organization.
